I think I repeat a pattern without seeing it. Help me find it. Don’t answer yet. Ask me up to seven questions, one at a time, about three situations in my life that ended in a similar way: jobs, projects, friendships or plans. Then name the one pattern you see in what I do, since that’s the part I can change, and lay it out as a loop: what sets it off, what I do next, what I get out of it in the short run, and what it costs me later. Show where it appears in each situation, and point to the earliest moment in the loop where I could do something different. If the three situations don’t really share a pattern, or the common factor isn’t me, say so instead of forcing one. Be direct. No padding and no reassurance I did not ask for.
