The prompt

Tone

Everyone carries a few stories about who they are: ‘I’m not a numbers person’, ‘I’m the responsible one’. I want to find one of mine that’s out of date. Don’t answer yet. Ask me up to six questions, one at a time, about how I describe myself, what I say I’m bad at, and what my family or oldest friends would say I’ve always been like. Then pick the one story most worth questioning. Tell me where it probably came from, the evidence from my answers for it and against it, and what it has kept me from trying. End with a more accurate version in one sentence. Mark what you’re guessing, and if the story still holds up, say so. Be direct. No padding and no reassurance I did not ask for.
