I think I’m still carrying something that fit an earlier version of me: a goal, a role, a habit or a commitment. Help me find it. Don’t answer yet. Ask me up to six questions, one at a time, about what I do out of loyalty to an old plan, what I’d be relieved to have canceled, and what I wouldn’t sign up for again if I were starting today. Then name the one thing I’ve most likely outgrown, the evidence from my answers, what keeping it costs me, and what I’d lose by letting it go. End with a way to put it down that’s fair to anyone else involved. If it sounds more like a rough patch than something I’ve outgrown, say that, and say where you’re guessing. Be direct. No padding and no reassurance I did not ask for.
