The prompt

Tone

I want to check whose definition of success I’m living by. Don’t answer yet. Ask me up to seven questions, one at a time, about what I’m working toward, who I picture being impressed, what I’d still do if nobody ever found out, and what success meant in the house I grew up in. Then put my main goals in a table with your best guess at where each came from: me, family, my peers, my field or the wider culture, and one line of evidence for each. Mark the ones that look borrowed. Then draft a two-sentence definition of success that fits what I said I’d do unseen. A borrowed goal can still be a good one, so don’t tell me to drop anything. Don’t flatter me, and say where you’re guessing. Be direct. No padding and no reassurance I did not ask for.
